My Mimi, the original Peaches, could take any flower arrangement, rip it all out of whatever vase was housing the greenery, and redo it to perfection. It was a true gift. My mom, Mama T, can revamp a room without buying a single new thing for it and make it look brand-spanking-new. Again, a gift.
With those two women in my head, me and one of my best friends were just able to vivify a couple of spaces in a home for another friend. We have decorated many different areas in the past together, so we decided to take on this one just for fun! And we had a blast!
The owner once had a pool table in this space and then tried to change it into an office and quite simply, the room just wasn’t working for her. All spaces in your house should work FOR you and not against you. They should also make you feel at home. Meaning, you just take a deep sigh when you walk in your home. Like…ahhhhh, I’m home. She still wanted it to be an office for herself but the room needed to have multi-use. An area to hang with a girlfriend over a glass of wine for a vent session. An area for her daughter to snuggle up and get some homework done. All while displaying who they are as a family. It also tied in easily to the entry way and living room so we revamped the entry way completely and touched up a few things in the living.
My friend went over before hand to take pictures and just talk to the owner about a what she liked. She was open to moving pretty much anything in her house and then gave us ideas that she liked. From there, we sent a few texts back and forth about specific pieces, and then set a date to come in and start. I honestly thought we’d be there at least two days. Y’ALL! We were DONE in 5 hours. That’s shopping included. WITH my two year old with us. WINNING! It helped she had a grandson, so Cason had plenty to entertain him, but still. I was impressed!
We moved furniture around that she already had to even out the weight of her rooms. She has a fun gallery wall above her couch so we wanted to not have anything else busy in that main living room. We moved her open shelf to the office/hang out room and traded it with a armoire that would be kept closed. Having a closed/solid piece opposite a busy wall grounded the room better. We filled the open shelf with some simple pops of color, pictures, and books. Grouping in odd numbers and not putting too much on the shelfs allowed for a clean look while displaying who they are as a family. Don’t decorate with the idea of being like someone else’s space. Don’t lose who you are trying to get a “picture” worthy room. It’s meant for YOUR family to live in it, so decorate it that way.
Next, we tackled some of her greenery pieces. We took out all the flowers and grouped like-color greenery together. It looked great in some of her white and metal vases she already had! After that, we swapped a lighter color couch table where a dark piece was in the entry, and skirted down to At Home. We had our list of things and knew we could get it all there. Not only did we get every extra piece there, but we also fit it all in my car in one haul. To say we were a sight to see is an understatement. Ha! Pretty sure it was not legal the amount of stuff I had in my car, but we made it and could not love the outcome more! I will list everything out that we purchased at At Home (you can look online but can’t purchase online so I didn’t link anything). ALWAYS start with what you have first. Living a vivified life is not about buying all the new things. It’s about mixing the old with the new and revamping what you have! We didn’t do anything extreme with this space and were still able to give it life. No paint, no light changes, but new life indeed!
Thank you so much Angela for letting us into your home and trusting us with this space! We hope you make many memories here! Call us when you’re ready for that glass of wine!
